As a follow up to my rage against spamming the twitter machine through DMs I thought I would post a video that would help us get back to the basics of twitter.

As you plan your twitter marketing campaigns it is important to remember what and how twitter was intended to be used.  Understanding these basics will help you to have a much more successful marketing campaign.

My top ten twitter pet peaves.

I am so annoyed by all of the Spam DMs I get on Twitter that I decided to write a post about the top 10 most annoying and most full of dog dung DMs that I get daily.

Oh, and by the way, most of these I get multiples of.  And by multiples I mean dozens.

So here we go.

10. Do you want to get 16,000 Twitter followers http://tinyurl.com…

My response oh yes, can I. Can I please apply the same principles you apply to get 200 followers and somehow miraculously get 16,000 “targeted business prospects” following me. Come on peopl. It’s unbeleivable the first time but buy the time I got the 212th message that said this I was convinced that this must be true baby back bull crap.

9. I dig your tweets.

Ok, so if just met me and you already dig my tweets than how come you don’t respond when I send you a DM? Huh? Hello? Robot? You there?

8.  Any DM with a URL in it.

7.  Any DM about how easy it is to make money online or from home.

No its not easy or everyone would work from home, everyone would be rich, there would be no recession and there would be no world hunger.

6. Thanks for the tweet. Want to earn “automated millions”?

Why yes. Why do you think I followed you?  Word on the street is that your the guy giving out “automated millions.”

This one really ticks me off because I actually bought it out of curiosity.  They said I had 60 days to get my money back and so I asked for a refund and they have not yet reply.  DO NOT BUY Sherry Ryan’s system (or whatever her name is.) All they teach you is stuff that is free information and then tell you to sell the same info.

It’s the modern day version of the old ad in the paper that said, “Send me 1 dollar and I’ll teach ou how to make money.”  Then you send in the $1 and you get a packet that says.  Do the same thing I did and keep the money you get from others.  Can you say illegal?

PS. The “software” simply uploads your website to your server.

Why of course? Do I invoice you? Are there any specific tasks that you want done or can I do anything I want for that one hour per day.  Can you say, “best job ever”?

I don’t get this one often, in fact that I know of only once, but here’s why it’s a peave.  “A proven online money making blew print that works!”

Thank you for clarifying.  Is that opposed to the “proven”system that “does not work”.

So how do I get in contact with accounts payable at twitter so I can submit my bills.  If twitter is paying your bills they should pay mine too.  Oh, and how come when I ask you about this twitter welfare program you don’t respond to my DM.

Are you kidding me?!

As I hang out on Social Media Sites I begin to feel as though they are a waste of time.

I once saw an article title “Social Not-Working” and it had a twitter badge that said “Come Waste Time With Me on Twitter.”

That was clever, I thought, since I often feel that way as I hang out on twitter, facebook, cafemom and others.

So is Social Media Marketing a waste of time?

I some times feel it is.  I am constantly looking for quality training on how to use the social networks effectively.

A while ago I came across this video by Perry Belcher.  I thought that it was a good video to help a person get the overall picture of what their mindset and strategy should be when approaching social networks as a marketing channel.

Where’s the Nuts and Bolts?

I’m constantly looking for the nuts and bolts.  I don’t feel that I have found it all, but I am finding bits and pieces of it and will gladly share what I can.

This video you just watch is great from a broad overview of how we should approach social media as marketers, but we sometimes need the nitty gritty.  We sometimes need to be taken by the hand and told, here’s what works and here’s what doesn’t.

I’m still in search of good training on this so feel free to recommend resources to me.

Twitter, Here’s my system.

I’m going to share with you my twitter system now.  All I ask is that you share some of what you have learned and what is working for you in the comments section.

Now, this system is constantly changing, but I try to use twitter consistantly, but not for long periods of time.  I recommend using twitter every day for between 15 to 30 minutes. Some times you will use it for more than that depending on what you need to get done.

I recommend using it every day because consistancy over time is where you will see results.  I recommend using twitter for short periods of time because it is easy to waste a lot of time on Twitter.

Here are a few things I try to do everyday on twitter.

1. I try to find like minded individuals and I follow them.

2. I try to interact with them by commenting on their tweets. I try to network with those individuals.

3. I research what is hot in my industries and niches and sometimes blog about that or create training and or marketing materials around those topics.

4. I post tweets with links to my sites, landing pages, special offers etc. This is my advertising.

5. I ask a lot of questions. I try to create interaction between me and my followers.
