Top 15 Ways to Build Your Subscriber List

Top 15 Ways to Build Your Subscriber List

Email marketing can be profitable for any business, no matter what kind of product or service you are selling. It is significantly cheaper than other advertising methods and it helps build credibility with your subscribers. As a result, you can generate more sales and profits.

The foundation for successful email marketing is a targeted, responsive and permission-based email list. If you have a list of subscribers that trust you and consider you an expert, you’ve completed the first step and are on your way!

Below you will several list-building ideas that will help you make the most of your email marketing efforts:

  1. Provide useful, relevant and unique content. Your visitors will not give you their email addresses just because they can subscribe to your newsletter free of charge. You have to provide unique and valuable information that will be useful to your subscribers.
  2. Add a subscription form to every page of your website. Make sure it stands out so it is easy to find. If appropriate, you can also include it in more than one place. For instance, your opt-in form might always appear in the top-left corner of your site, while you also include an opt-in at the bottom of some of your popular articles.
  3. Make it easy for your reader to sign up. The more information you request, the fewer people will opt-in. In most cases, a name and an email address should suffice. If it’s not necessary, don’t include it here. (Note: If you don’t have a Privacy Policy, put the words “privacy policy generator” into a search engine and you should be able to find a suitable form for your readers to review.
  4. Publish a Privacy Policy. Let your readers know that they can be confident you will not share their information with others. The easiest way to do this is to set up a Privacy Policy web page and provide the link to it below your opt-in form.
  5. Show your first issue or other sample to your visitors. This lets potential subscribers review your newsletter before they sign up to determine if it is something they’d be interested in.
  6. Archive past newsletter issues. A “library” of past newsletters is both appealing and useful to visitors and builds your credibility as an authority. In addition, if your articles are written with good SEO techniques in mind, they can send additional traffic to your web site through good search engine positioning.
  7. Contact other newsletter publishers. Introduce yourself and explore ways you may be able to help each other. Perhaps you can introduce other publisher’s newsletters or print articles they have written to your list, with a link to sign up. When you contact them, be sure to tell them why you think THEIR readers would like what you have to offer and why YOUR readers would benefit from their newsletters. This is a win-win scenario; both of you will build your lists faster!
  8. Give away bonuses subscribers can use. Create an opt-in bonus for joining your subscriber list. You can write an ebook or PDF report, or even hire a programmer to create downloadable or web-based software. But don’t limit yourself to only a gift for new opt-ins. Remind your readers that the next bonus is coming soon. People hate to miss out on things. If you systematically pass on “goodies” throughout the year, your subscribers are unlikely to leave.
  9. Ask your subscribers to pass it on. Word of mouth is a powerful viral technique that works great with email marketing. If your subscribers find the content you share with them to be informative, they will pass your newsletter on to their friends. This can be a good source of new subscribers.
  10. Let others reprint your newsletter as long as the content is not modified. Many webmasters and newsletter publishers are actively looking for high-quality content and, if they reprint your newsletter, you will get new subscribers, traffic and links pointing to your site.
  11. Include a “Sign Up” button in the newsletter. If you are using plain text instead of HTML, provide a text link to your subscription page. You may feel that this is not required because the subscriber is already on your list, but remember that readers will forward your newsletters to others, or reprint it online. You want to make it easy for them to subscribe.
  12. Add a squeeze page. A squeeze page has one goal − to get an opt-in and build your list. Think of it like a mini-sales letter for your subscription or opt-in bonus. It features a powerful headline and a couple of very important benefits that should make subscribers salivate to sign up to your list. Once created, use a service such as WordTracker to find hundreds of targeted keywords, and advertise there using pay-per-click advertising from Google, MSN and Yahoo.
  13. Include testimonials on your squeeze page. This is crucial. Put 1 or 2 strong testimonials from satisfied subscribers on your squeeze page. This can be in any format, but you may find that multimedia (audio or video social proof) is more “believable”. To increase that believability, include full names, locations and/or urls; don’t use “Bob K, FL” as a testimonial name.
  14. Blog religiously. Blogging is a great way to communicate with your potential customers, and it creates a nice synergy with your email marketing. Be sure to include your newsletter sign-up form on each page of your blog. You can start a free blog at Blogger or Wordpress.
  15. Post on other blogs. Post great comments and information on similar blogs with a link to your squeeze or opt-in page. Also comment on others’ blogs through trackbacks. In most cases, your comments will be posted on their blogs with a link back to your site. This is an easy way to generate new traffic and subscribers.

Lesson # 3 From Mike.

As you know I love what I learn from Mike Dillard.  Here is an email that I got from him recently.  I thought it would be of value to my readers.

Here’s The Secret Software I Used To Build

My Online Empire… (And It’s Free!)

Ok me, as promised I’m going to reveal the secret weapon I use on a daily basis to achieve incredible results in business.

It’s a piece of software that has built my entire little empire brick-by-brick, day-by-day…

It’s not DreamWeaver, Outlook, Front Page, 1ShoppingCart, or an auto-responder.
No… I’m afraid to say that it’s just as lame, and yet just as important as the secret I revealed yesterday.

When I look out across this industry, I see two kinds of people…

Those who have made “execution” a daily habit, and those who have not.

Here’s what I mean by that…

Many close friends and associates have noticed that I’ve acquired one particular trait over the years which has enabled me to achieve some incredible things.

It’s not that I’m smarter than anyone else, or that I’ve had better opportunities, or that I’ve had more money to start with, (which was definitively not the case).

They all say it comes down to one thing… “Mike, what makes you different than everyone else out there is that once you have an idea, you actually sit down and do it”.

To be honest, that never really occurred to me, and it made me stop and really think.
I just took it for granted that if you have a great idea, you freaking do it right?

But most people don’t. They have an incredible idea and think about doing it. Day’s go by. Weeks go by. Months go by. Before they realize it, they’re still sitting in the same position they were a year before.

I don’t think about things, I do them.

I have an idea, and I execute that idea one little step at a time, each and every day until the project is complete.

Success is not a destination, it’s the result of a pattern of habitual behaviors.

That’s why you can take someone who’s had a track record in one field, and move them to another with the expectation that success will be achieved again.

It’s not the job, the business opportunity, the new marketing system, or the product that resulted in their success… It was their daily habits. They were “do-ers”.

There are successful people and unsuccessful people in every company – all using the same tools, the same websites, and the same system.

The difference is found in their daily habits.

So how you can you transition from a “thinker”, to a “do-er”?

Well that’s where my little secret software weapon comes into play. This little gem has been crucial in creating my habitual pattern of getting things done, producing millions in revenue in the process.

It’s called “WordPad”.

Also known as NotePad or TextEdit for Mac users, it’s that little program that opens up to a blank white page and just stares at you with a blinking cursor at the top.

You write text in it. That’s all. It doesn’t do anything what-so-ever, or even check your spelling.

Yes I know… Another big let down just like yesterday right?

Well here’s why this program is so valuable to you… It’s your new boss.

Every night before I go to bed, I pull up my Word Pad file which I save as “To-Do.txt”, and I write down five tasks that I must complete the following day in order of importance.

For example, here’s my actual “To Do List” for today:

To Do List:

1: Write and send MS newsletter.
2: Update Adwords campaign.
3: Run new headline split-test.
4: Finish Chapter 4 in “Building On A Budget”.
5: Return prospect phone calls and emails.
6: Read a book.

Now here’s what’s so magical about this process…

If you make your list the night before, you’ll subconscious will have all night to think about it.

The moment you wake up, you’re on task. You already know what your goals for the day are. You’re focused, and by starting your day with this focus and this purpose that’s already laid out for you, it allows you to ignore the onslaught of distractions that come with each new morning.

You’ll find that if you don’t have your To-Do List waiting for you in the morning, that you’ll get side-tracked immediately. Life happens. It gets in the way.

And unless you take back that control and focus, it will prevent you from accomplishing anything. This is the deadly trap you must avoid at all costs that’s preventing you from achieving the results you want.

Above all other things, this little process of creating my To-Do List each night using nothing more than Word Pad, as allowed me to create the Magnetic Sponsoring empire.

The most sophisticated and effective marketing system in the industry was created one step at a time by my little Word Pad file.

And here’s my challenge to you…

Make a commitment to use my method for 30 days, starting tonight. Before you go to bed, make your list of 5 tasks that you MUST complete by the end of the next day.

They must be actions “tasks”, not goals.

If you do the tasks, your goals will be accomplished automatically.

Don’t put…

1: Sponsor a new rep
2: Get a new customer
3: Read a book
4: Etc…

If sponsoring a new rep or getting a new customer is the goal, focus on the tasks that will result in that goal like producing 20 new leads, and contacting previous prospects.

1: Send out a press release.
2: Send a newsletter to my list.
3: Add 3 new AdGroups to my PPC campaign.
4: Talk to at least 5 prospects.
5: Read Chapter 3 in “MLMTrafficFormula”

If you do this without fail for 30 days, you’ll be a completely different person, and you’ll have made more progress in one month, than you have in the past 12.

This is EXACTLY how you execute traffic building methods revealed in courses like www.BuildingOnABudget.com, for maximum results.

Thank you for your leadership,

Mike Dillard

How are you Gathering Leads and Building a Relationship With Them?

Dear Friend,

I’ve recently made great strides with the GetResponse marketing system, and I think you could benefit from it as well. It was easy and fun to use from day one, but now I have even more reasons to like it!

It seems like every website you visit now wants you to fill out a form to sign-up as a member or join their e-mail list. Name..email..name..email. Love them or hate them, forms are the vital link between you and your website visitors. A well-designed sign-up form can add dozens, even hundreds of new subscribers to your mailing list every day, and generate thousands of dollars in sales. But whether you sell only a few items online, or you have a webshop with thousands, don’t rely on your website to generate all of your online sales.

Your website forms will produce more sales and subscriptions when combined with a follow-up email marketing system. Why? It’s no secret in advertising that most customers need to be presented with an idea or product several times before they commit. This is a simple strategy used by literally every successful business, and they all do it for a reason - it delivers great results. Here’s how.

Quite simply, you use forms to capture your visitor’s name and email, then GetResponse automatically feeds them useful product information until you close the sale. In my business, follow-up email marketing has given me an effective way to establish trusting relationships with new customers, to make more direct sales in less time, and ensure that subscribers return to my website frequently.

As you may know, my autoresponder of choice is GetResponse, which is the most reliable and feature-packed autoresponder on the Internet. With GetResponse, you’re not limited to simply collecting the name and email address of your visitors. The step-by-step wizards ensure that even without any programming or design skills, you can create sign-up forms that fit perfectly with your website design, and collect all the fields of information you could possibly need from visitors.

Another important method used by most consumer advertising pros today is called “personalized” marketing. The part I like best about GetResponse is how all of the captured custom fields can later be used to personalize the email marketing experience for each subscriber − just by adding simple personalization “tags” to your outgoing messages. Custom fields can also help to sort subscribers into groups to ensure they receive only relevant emails - on time and at the right time.

If you would like to put your direct marketing on autopilot AND maximize the effectiveness of custom capture forms, I strongly recommend GetResponse!

Top 10 Reasons to Build a Subscriber List (Ezine)

Top 10 Reasons to Have an Ezine

  1. Establish yourself as a trusted expert. People search online for information and will look to you to provide it to them. Every week (or whatever schedule you determine) provides an opportunity to build on this, while reinforcing your brand.
  2. Build a relationship with your list. It’s common knowledge that people like to buy from people they like. By using ezines to connect with readers in their homes, you can develop a relationship of familiarity and trust. Be sure to share a little about yourself or your company in every issue, whether it be an anecdote, event, or employee spotlight.
  3. Keep in touch with prospects and clients. Consideration should be given to eventually developing two ezines: one for prospects and one for clients, as each require different information. This is a great way to remind your readers of weekly specials, updates to your FAQs, or new and improved products you will be launching, in addition to articles of interest.
  4. Drive traffic to your web site or blog. Call attention to new blog posts or other changes to your web site, with links directly to those pages. Remind readers of your online newsletter archives. Promote special sales (maybe with discount coupon codes only for subscribers) with a link to the sales page. Use links to turn your ezines and newsletters into “silent salespersons” – driving traffic to your web site and building your lists.
  5. Build content on your web site. Make a habit to adding your ezines and newsletters to your web site in an Archive area. This serves a few purposes.
    • Visitors can read an issue or two to determine if your ezine will be of interest to them, which will increase sign-ups and retention.
    • If you optimize your article placements, it will not only make your web site “meatier”, but bring new traffic from the search engines.
  6. Get feedback from your readers. Make it easy for your prospects and customers to get in touch. Ask them to take action and comment on your articles. Conduct a survey. Start a “Letters to the Editor” column in your ezine. Feedback allows you to fine tune your message, improve your marketing, and expand your product line.
  7. Develop an information product. If you deliver your newsletter once a week and include two articles, at the end of a year you’ll have 104 well-researched articles in your portfolio! Pick the best-of-the-best and turn them into a bonus ebook for opting-in to your list, submit to download sites to build your list, or sell in PDF-format!
  8. Grow your mailing list. Let your ezine subscribers work for you. Be sure to remind your readers that it’s okay to forward your newsletter to anyone they’d like. In addition, it’s important to include sign-up directions for those who received your ezine from viral marketing methods. A simple line titled, “Get Your Own Copy of XXXXXX”, with a link to your squeeze or opt-in page is all it takes!
  9. Gather demographic data. By offering surveys, feedback forms, and niche reports, you’ll be able to get valuable information about your prospects and customers. Learn what makes your readers tick, how to better serve them, and make sure they become repeat customers.
  10. Save money! All of the above benefits of publishing an ezine are free or almost free. The small cost for a top-rate ezine publishing system is nothing compared to the cost of brochures, business cards, advertising, direct mail, pay-per-click or other means of promotion. Because your newsletter is delivered online, you can grow your list to be as large as you want without worrying about the expense. Bottom line − it’s been proven that email marketing is the most cost-effective solution for companies just like yours.

Are You Kidding Me?!

My top ten twitter pet peaves.

I am so annoyed by all of the Spam DMs I get on Twitter that I decided to write a post about the top 10 most annoying and most full of dog dung DMs that I get daily.

Oh, and by the way, most of these I get multiples of.  And by multiples I mean dozens.

So here we go.

10. Do you want to get 16,000 Twitter followers http://tinyurl.com…

My response oh yes, can I. Can I please apply the same principles you apply to get 200 followers and somehow miraculously get 16,000 “targeted business prospects” following me. Come on peopl. It’s unbeleivable the first time but buy the time I got the 212th message that said this I was convinced that this must be true baby back bull crap.

9. I dig your tweets.

Ok, so if just met me and you already dig my tweets than how come you don’t respond when I send you a DM? Huh? Hello? Robot? You there?

8.  Any DM with a URL in it.

7.  Any DM about how easy it is to make money online or from home.

No its not easy or everyone would work from home, everyone would be rich, there would be no recession and there would be no world hunger.

6. Thanks for the tweet. Want to earn “automated millions”?

Why yes. Why do you think I followed you?  Word on the street is that your the guy giving out “automated millions.”

5. Generate Cash At Will Using Twitter. Turbo Cash Generator and It’s All Done Automatically. http://bit.ly

This one really ticks me off because I actually bought it out of curiosity.  They said I had 60 days to get my money back and so I asked for a refund and they have not yet reply.  DO NOT BUY Sherry Ryan’s system (or whatever her name is.) All they teach you is stuff that is free information and then tell you to sell the same info.

It’s the modern day version of the old ad in the paper that said, “Send me 1 dollar and I’ll teach ou how to make money.”  Then you send in the $1 and you get a packet that says.  Do the same thing I did and keep the money you get from others.  Can you say illegal?

PS. The “software” simply uploads your website to your server.

4.  Would you work an hour per day to earn $5,000 per month? http://….

Why of course? Do I invoice you? Are there any specific tasks that you want done or can I do anything I want for that one hour per day.  Can you say, “best job ever”?

3.  Thanks For Following! If You Have Time, Plz Take A Look At ==> A Proven Online Money Making Blueprint That Works! http://www...

I don’t get this one often, in fact that I know of only once, but here’s why it’s a peave.  “A proven online money making blew print that works!”

Thank you for clarifying.  Is that opposed to the “proven”system that “does not work”.

2. Would you work an hour per day to earn $5,000 per month? http://….

I just got another one of these so I had to list it again.

1. See how twitter pays my bills http://tinyurl.com…

So how do I get in contact with accounts payable at twitter so I can submit my bills.  If twitter is paying your bills they should pay mine too.  Oh, and how come when I ask you about this twitter welfare program you don’t respond to my DM.

Are you kidding me?!
